Understanding OCD: Breaking the Cycle of Obsessions and Compulsions

Explore the causes, symptoms, and proven treatments for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder—and learn how recovery is possible.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition marked by recurring, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) that a person feels driven to perform. These obsessions often cause significant anxiety and the compulsions are meant to reduce that distress, even if only temporarily. Common obsessions include fears of contamination, harm or making mistakes, while compulsions might involve excessive cleaning, checking, counting or repeating actions. OCD can interfere with daily functioning, relationships and quality of life, but it is treatable. With evidence-based therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), particularly Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and in some cases medication, individuals with OCD can learn to manage their symptoms and regain control over their lives.
